James Henry Lane

1833–1907

Brigadier General

James Henry Lane was born at Matthews Court House, Virginia, on July 28, 1833. He received his education from private tutors and schools until 1851, when he entered the Virginia Military Institute at Lexington. After his 1854 graduation, as second in his class, he attended the University of Virginia, receiving a degree in science in 1857. He worked as an engineer on a hydrographic survey of the York River before accepting a position as professor of mathematics and military tactics instructor at the Virginia Military Institute. He left to become commandant and professor of mathematics at the State Seminary of Florida. That appointment was followed by one as professor of natural philosophy and instructor of tactics at the North Carolina Military Institute in Charlotte, which was under the supervision of future Confederate general D.H. Hill.
